Virginia native and junior economics major Mya Spencer is committed to leaving a lasting impact, not only for Spelman College but future Spelmanites alike. The Spelman 25 for 25 Spotlight award is nomination based where the awardees are chosen by their peers to represent the best of Spelman. For Mya Spencer she has been acknowledged for her public service and community engagement.
In 2024, Spencer competed in the Deloitte Consulting National Case Competition which she and her group went on to win on the local level and competed at the nation level. With her experience, she then advised a group of first-years and sophomores to compete in this year’s competition in which they also won on the local level.
“It means that my work and what I do hasn’t gone unnoticed. And I find it kind of endearing and I really appreciate that people kind of recognize the things that I do as commendable work,” Spencer said.
With the contributions that Spencer has given to the college, it would be remiss to turn a blind eye to her efforts. Not only is she committed to bettering her peers, Spencer also strives to gain experience in the field of finance. As an economics major, she has aspirations of becoming a banking analyst and eventually going on to earn her CPA and MBA. Spencer continues finding ways to reach her goals, and has scored a Goldman Sachs internship for the upcoming summer.
Spelman has poured into Spencer in the past three years, and her future lies in supporting the institution’s legacy.
“I definitely want to continue to give back especially because my little sister might come here and just want to keep pouring back to this community and the people that are in this moment,” Spencer said.
Spelman has taught her invaluable lessons that she will impart onto young Spelmanites who are still learning and growing. One of those lessons is learning to take the time to get to know oneself and one’s aspirations.
“I feel like everyone says this, but be true to yourself. Don’t try to be anyone else or change yourself for anyone or anything else. Do what you are passionate about and everything else will follow. The people, the things, what’s right for you will find you”.
Spencer represents the caliber of students that Spelman College produces: a well rounded, passionate and driven individual who is committed to giving back to those who shape Spelman’s bright future.
