“We only talk about politics when it hits home; it should be talked about way before things happen so we can find a solution,” says Jaleia Latson. The sophomore sociology major and Bonner scholar loves politics but has no desire to become a politician. Instead, she wants to leave a legacy of passion, love and exuberant humility– which she’s already begun through her public service and community engagement efforts.
As co-coordinator of Spelhouse Votes, Latson put her vision for voter mobilization and registration into action. “We wanted it to be an initiative where anyone could get involved,” she explains. Representing Spelman and Morehouse, Latson’s team was a collaboration of students and organizations who manned tables, encouraged voter registration and provided non-partisan candidate information for AUC students. Latson’s unwavering dedication has led to her recognition as a 2025 Spotlight Awardee.
While she doesn’t engage with her work for recognition, reflecting on her nomination, Latson says, “It’s inspiring to see that people are inspired by the work that I do.”
Spelhouse Votes is just a portion of Latson’s diverse interests when it comes to making a social impact. She’s ventured into sustainability by working with the Sustainable Spelman Office and education through volunteering at M. Agnes Jones Elementary, both domains she didn’t expect to be interested in. One of the biggest lessons she’s learned is to be open “Don’t limit yourself, you never know…there’s always somewhere for you to fit in,” she advises.
Latson knows first-hand that engagement in service and academics can become overwhelming, so she’s a proponent for balance. From her experience to “pick what you can handle and commit to it” has served her well. She also says she’s learned to give herself grace. “We have to learn to not be so hard on ourselves,” especially in adjusting to Spelman’s culture of holding its students to high standards.
Along with a commitment to making change, a strong network of family and encouragement is what drives Latson. “It keeps me going to know that people are fond of the work I do and the things I’m passionate about.”
Throughout her journey, Latson’s spirituality and faith has been a source of strength and wisdom. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is discerning things God is telling me,” she says. Latson believes that listening to intuition and connection with a higher power is key, “Consult with whoever you believe in..it’ll get you to the places you need to be.”
After graduation, Latson wants to leave her mark through consistency in her community engagement and enrollment in graduate school. “I know my time at Spelman is a very important part of my life, but I want to continue my journey way past Spelman.”
When asked what piece of advice she had for aspiring change makers Latson simply says, “Do what you love everyday.”
